Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be cleaner or waitress to help them remain alive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine however, no theatre job opportunities came up. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return home to the United States and quit her position. There, she made ends meet with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
